【Etiquette】Social etiquette in Slovakia
The Slovak Republic is a landlocked country in Central Europe, with a land area of 49,036 square kilometres and its capital, Bratislava. What are the social etiquettes in Slovakia? Let's find out with the editor!
Slovaks are warm and friendly, and when they meet their guests, they always greet them with "hello", look them in the eye and tell them their full names. If necessary, they will hand over their business cards. When introducing people to acquaintances, they will add a title or title before their surname. Relatives and friends only call each other by first name, not by last name.
When meeting guests, they mainly shake hands, and when they part, they shake hands again. In public, after a verbal greeting, a handshake may or may not be shaken. Regarding the handshake between men and women, they do not care who reaches out first, and it is common for men to reach out and shake hands with women first.
Women who are close to each other kiss each other on the cheek when they meet, men hug each other, and men and women touch each other's cheeks. The elders kiss the foreheads of the younger generations, the parents and children kiss their faces and foreheads, and the relatives and friends of the same generation are also close to the cheeks. Men sometimes kiss their honored ladies with a hand. Slovaks have a strong sense of hierarchy, and there is a clear distinction between superiors and subordinates, managers and the governed.
When invited to a dinner at a local's house, it is best to bring wine or liquor as a gift and offer flowers to the hostess. However, there are also some Slovaks who do not like flowers, especially red flowers, and consider giving flowers to be a romantic act between lovers.
Slovaks respect the right to privacy, chat with people, take care not to involve each other's private affairs, and do not visit neighbors, relatives and friends without an agreement. When talking, the two will keep an appropriate distance and are not used to getting too close. In addition to shaking hands, hugging, and kissing, it is not customary to touch other parts of the body such as hooking shoulders and backs. Gifts between friends are generally not too heavy. Loud laughter, hysteria, banging on the table, etc., are considered uncivilized and rude.
