To Insure Prompt Service is a form of reward for thanking the service staff, which originated in London, England in the 18th century, when customers put change in the middle of the hotel table with the words "Guaranteed prompt service", they will receive high-quality and fast service from the waiter. Combine the first letter of the above English words to become tips, which translates as tips, and pays about 5%~25% of the total expenditure.

For example, at the end of the Middle Ages, it was common for hoteliers in Germany to ask for tips from their guests, which was called "drinking money" (for waiters); In ancient China, there was also a habit of giving "rewards", and the objects of rewards were shopkeepers, slaves, scholars, servants, heels, etc.

Today, tipping has long since spread to all parts of the world. There are three main types of tip payments:

 Single payment

In Europe and the United States, almost all hotels will charge 10~15% of the "service charge" (i.e., tip), and the way of bill payment varies from place to place. Some ask the customer to fill in the percentage of the service fee on the bill (usually 10~15%), and then the waiter takes out the money from the cash collection office as a service charge with the customer's signature on the bill. At present, more hotels, restaurants, etc. take the service charge of 10~15% directly on the bill, so there is no need to fill in the tip, as long as you see the total amount on the total consumption column, confirm that there is no problem, and sign the bill, this kind of bill payment is also a performance of withholding tips.

 Pay by card

Tipping by credit card is a very common situation in foreign countries, and you can write the amount in the tip column of the bill. If you don't want to tip, just put a "-" or "0" in the tip field, add the amount to the tip, fill in the total amount field, and sign your name to complete the transaction. The advantage of using a credit card to pay is that it avoids the hassle and embarrassment of making change, which is more convenient than cash.

 Gold payments

In foreign countries, the higher the size of the hotel where you stay, the more types of tips there are, and in addition to the service charge on the bill, there are other additional services that are also subject to tipping. For example, when drivers, doormen, bellmen, restaurant waiters, and room attendants provide services for themselves, they should give tips to show respect, and usually such tips that are not on the bill need to be paid separately in cash to the service provider.

For service personnel in different positions, the specific practices are as follows:

 Pick-up and drop-off drivers

Shuttle Driver

It mainly depends on how much luggage they take for you, and the number of tips can be increased appropriately according to the number of pieces of luggage, generally 1$-2$.

门童

Doorman

If they just smile at you and open the door for you, you don't have to tip them at all. However, if they provide you with other services, such as taking your luggage from the taxi to the lobby front desk, you will need to give them 2$-5$.

 Porter

Bellperson

In general, the tip is about 1$-5$ per piece of luggage. If the luggage is heavy or you need a bellman to bring it upstairs, then the price should be higher; If you ask the person to operate the TV, introduce the features of the room, etc., you should also tip. In addition, helping to call a taxi usually gives 1$-2$.

 Room attendant

Room Attendant

If you order food in your room and the room service charge is not included, the waiter should be tipped 15%; If the room service fee is already included, it may not be paid or it may be appropriately given according to one's own habits. If you ask the hotel's housekeeping staff for directions to the nearest café, you don't need to tip at all; However, if you ask them to book a movie ticket or dinner for you, you will need to tip anywhere from $5 to 10$. Moreover, according to the popularity of the tickets they booked, the specifications of the restaurant, etc., they can give more accordingly.

Room attendants are easily forgotten because most of the time they work guests are not there. Some hotels have started to adopt a proactive reminder strategy, such as the American Hotel and Lodging Association (AHLA), which publishes a tipping guide, telling guests to put a 1$-5$ tip in an envelope before leaving the room, and if it is a better hotel, the tip will be more expensive.

 Waiter in the restaurant

Restaurant Waiter

The service charge for a waiter in a restaurant is usually about 12.5% of the customer's total spend. Although more and more restaurants now include service fees in the cost of meals, the range of tips for those restaurants that do not include them is about 10%~15%, and if there is a special service, it will be about 20%. This rule also applies to room service as well as bartenders.

 Hotel front desk attendant

Hotel Front Desk Clerk

They are generally not expected to be tipped but if they book a dinner at a fancy restaurant for you, you should tip 5-10$ as a thank you.

 Hotel pick-up attendant

Hotel Attendants

If you ask the hotel pick-up staff to park or pick up the car for you, you will need to tip between $2 and $5.

 When should I tip?

(1) If the waiter's service charge is included in the accommodation fee, he or she should be tipped from the second night of the stay.

(2) If something is entrusted to the manager, the basic tip is 5 US dollars, if you are very satisfied with the service, you can pay more tips accordingly, and you may get more returns.

(3) The basic gratuity will be upgraded according to the level of the hotel. The minimum tip for general hotel staff is $1, while the tip for high-end hotels is increased to $2.

(4) Packing generally does not require a tip, but some special packaging services such as restricted items and some larger orders are best to pay a 10% tip. Generally, door-to-door takeaways, especially pizza and Chinese food, cost 10%-20%.

(5) When spending money in restaurants, bars and cafes, the amount of tips is generally adjusted according to their level. Generally speaking, the tip for a fine dining restaurant is about 10%-15% of the amount spent. Taxis are usually tipped at 15% of the fare, but are usually only $1; In addition to 10%-15% of the fare, it is enough to pay only 0.5-1 USD elsewhere.

When is it not necessary to tip?

(1) If you are not satisfied with the service, the tip amount can be halved. The usual practice is to place two penny coins side by side on top of the banknote, indicating that you are deliberately tipping low because you are dissatisfied with the service. If the waiter offends you and you don't want to tip anything, then you can still just put two penny coins and tell him that you didn't forget to tip.

(2) For a service person who is deliberately courteous in order to expect you to tip more, just give him a $1 tip at the beginning and then thank him verbally.

(3) If the waiter of the tour group asks for a tip for carrying your luggage, just say "thank you" to him, as the basic tip for carrying your luggage is already included in your tour price.

(4) When you see a large denomination of banknotes in a tip tray in a restaurant or other place, don't be arrogant because you love face, because the money in the tip tray may be deliberately shown to the guests.

(5) In many Asian countries, such as Japan, South Korea, etc., tips are included in other expenses. Sometimes, even an extra tip will not be accepted.

In fact, the reason for tipping abroad is very simple, the so-called "wool comes out of the sheep". Tipping is not only an important tradition in most European and American countries, but also because the basic salary of service workers in these countries is very low, and in many areas it is even lower than the local legal minimum wage. As a result, they need to tip to make up the minimum wage gap and pay their taxes, making them their main source of income. It can be said that tips are an important part of the income of service personnel.

 It's worth noting here:

(1) If you want to express your special gratitude to the waiter or expect better service, you can tip more, and a one-time tip of $10 or $20 will be impressive. In this way, the service staff may also accept some difficult requests from you.

(2) When a man or a woman travels together, the man should come forward to pay, even if the tip is paid. This is a basic courtesy in some countries.

(3) It is better to tip the service staff in paper money, and do not dispose of small denomination coins as tips. For the same $1, if you give a lot of coins to the other person, it is a dissatisfaction with "your service is poor" and will hurt the other person's self-esteem.

 (4) Tipping should follow the principle of moderation.

Giving too much money, exceeding the norm or giving money indiscriminately, will be seen as deliberately flaunting one's wealth; Giving too little can be seen as stingy and stingy, and some tourists even receive poor service because they tip less.

 (5) The timing of tipping is also important.

If you give at the time of parting, you will not be able to compensate for all the unhappiness that arises. On the other hand, it is more appropriate to tip the waiter as soon as you arrive to show a little kindness and encouragement to his work. In addition, it is best to use polite eyes, gestures, or plain words to indicate the location of the tip to the waiter who comes into the room to clean the room, so that the other party can understand the meaning of the tip.

 (6) There are many occasions abroad where tipping is done privately.

Generally, the tip is placed under the tea tray and wine glass; or directly in his hand when thanking the hospitality staff; Or when paying, only the entire amount recovered will be taken, and the change will be counted as a tip; Or pay more and don't take the rest of the money. For the reception staff representing the official, because they do not charge tips, they can give small souvenirs as appropriate.

All in all, tipping is a very common behavior in most European and American countries, and Chinese people should follow the local customs, which is a sign of grace. The reason why most people in China do not understand the behavior of tipping is mainly because Chinese people do not have the habit of tipping, and the tip part of the domestic bill has long been counted in advance.
